Today’s addition to the toolbox is Canada Post. This is a general merchandise retail website but we’re going to focus on the appliances section of the home and garden category of the site found at http://www.canadapost.ca/shopper/appliances/pc/28.

While the site sells everything from jeans to computers, we’re interested in the corner of the site that sells ranges, stoves, dishwashers, refrigerators and clothes dryers. Canada Post features major brands such as Maytag, Whirlpool and KitchenAid. In the refrigerator section you can find everything from those cute little ‘fridges that college kids like to put in their dorm rooms to proper refrigerator/freezers for the modern kitchen to wine cellars.

Besides a variety of ways to make food cold, the site also features plenty of appliances for making food hot. Under “Cooktops, Stoves & Ranges” you can find single place cook-tops, full ranges, and complete stoves with range tops in both gas and electric, depending on your needs.

Today’s addition to the toolbox is Become.com, a general merchandise retail website. This site has almost anything you can imagine.

Are you digging the summer weather? It might be on the warm side this year but it’s still a great time to get outside. To keep the worst of the summer heat off you, consider a canopy chair from Become.com. These handy folding canvas chairs feature a canopy directly over your head to keep the sun’s rays from beating down too hard on you.

The summer can be rough on your deck. Another product at Become.com designed to make your summertime a little easier is deck cleaner. With a wide variety of deck cleaners available from non-skid to sea safe deck cleaners, there’s surely one to fit your needs.

You can’t spend the whole summer inside, though. Sometimes, the heat just gets to be too much and we have to retreat inside. Or, a summer storm rolls through forcing us to seek shelter. We don’t have to leave our sunny times outside when we go in. Try decorating by dressing your windows up in summer-time colors like red, yellow or orange curtains

Guest post from: Constance Rodgers

When I first moved here I knew absolutely no one. I found a great house that was pretty cheap but the only problem was, it was kind of out in the middle of nowhere. I’m getting used to it now but for the first few months every creak and bump made me jump out of my skin…it was pretty scary living alone! I went to WILDBLUEDeals.com to look into internet and I had to literally talk to the mailman myself to find out if he would agree to deliver all the way out here so I didn’t have to go to the post office everyday. I’ve never lived anywhere this rural in my life and I’m really starting to get used to the quiet and all the space – there’s something to this simple life kind of deal. Anyway, I’m probably going to have a big bonfire in my backyard in a few weeks for all my new friends here and that will really prove to myself that I wasn’t crazy for making this decision!

Mom and I decided to join a club that promotes running for good health. Mom is getting on toward fifty now, and although I’m young and fairly healthy, I am gaining a lot of weight and I want to get fit.

Our first run was down on the promenade on Monday. There are about ten of us in the group, or least there were ten there for the first run. I tried to learn everyone’s names, but there wasn’t much time before we started running, and when you’re running it’s nearly impossible to carry on a conversation.

Mom and I did pretty well for our first time. We were both kind of lagging behind the group by the end of the run, but we didn’t mind. It was good to get out in the fresh air and exercise, and it was nice to do something together for a change. Usually we’re so busy that we don’t see much of each other.

The next meeting is not til next week, but mom and I decided to go for a run together on Thursday ourselves. It was really funny because mom forgot to take off her slippers, and after she set the home security alarm (Allhomesecurity), we got outside and she realized. She had to go back inside and find her sneakers.

Today’s addition to our toolbox is Knife Depot, an online retailer of all imaginable knives and knife accessories. In a nod to knifes bladed cousins, they even sell a variety of swords and axes.

The number and variety of knives available at Knife Depot is surprising. From big machete knifes to small but deadly throwing knives that come in packs from three to seven to diving knives. Besides the blades themselves, Knife Depot also sells sheaths, display cases for your best knives and cleaning and maintenance supplies to help you keep your knives at their best. In short, this site carries pretty much anything a blade enthusiast could want or need.

Personally, I’m not much of a knife guy. But, growing up in a small town in the Midwest, I learned early on to carry a pocket knife pretty much all the time. Having a small folding knife in my pocket gives me a quick and easy tool with a surprising number of uses throughout the day.

Today’s addition to the toolbox is dualflushkit.com. This site features a dual flush toilet kit and a water conservation devise for standard toilets.

This device promises to save water in a way that could never be easier. It promises to convert your toilet to a dual flush system that enhances the performance of your current system for a fraction of the cost of a new dual flush toilet.

The selectAFlush dual flush retrofit produces a current toilet that performs like low flow toilet. It even saves water in the same way that a high priced HET toilet does. No need to buy a whole new toilet and send your old toilet to the trash heap. With dualflushkit.com you can just convert your current toilet into a water saving dual flush system. Sounds good to us!

We’re always looking for nice home improvement websites here at With the Grain. We were sent a link to FairfieldBathroomsDirect.com, a site that features a whole range of bathroom accessories from faucets to radiators to some groovy toilet seats. Any readers who are redecorating their water closet or just need to replace an item or two might want to check them out.

For today’s Additions to the Toolbox let’s look at Shopwiki.com. This shopping site is a different type of shopping site. Most Internet shopping sites charge ecommerce websites for their listings. This guarantees that only the sites with substantial marketing budgets will be found by them. Shopwiki works more like Google and other search engines in that it actively searches for relevant ecommerce websites. It seems apparent that this will provide a more accurate and fair snapshot of the ecommerce Internet landscape.

What does that mean for users? Starting from their home page one can easily find their Home & Garden section which includes many helpful subtopics for readers of With the Grain.

But Shopwiki.com is more than an Internet shopping mall. It also provides a lot of great, useful information to its users. Check out their pages about garden hoses, hedge trimmers and home furnishings. These buyers guides and consumer information pages do a lot more than simply show you where you can buy this stuff.

Today’s edition of Additions to the Toolbox focuses on Shopwiki.com. This shopping site is different from other shopping sites. These sites generally charge ecommerce sites for a listing guaranteeing that only those sites with big marketing budgets will be found. Shopwiki is more like Wikipedia in that is allows consumers to list the stores and sites that they’ve found. The theory goes that this will provide and more accurate and fair picture of the ecommerce Internet landscape.

What does that mean for us? Well, starting from their home page one can easily find their Home & Garden section which includes many helpful subtopics.

Drilling down into, say, Home Improvement we see guides things like workshop and home improvement tools. You can see that plenty of information, manufacturers and vendors, both big and small. For another example check out the guide page for kitchen knives under the Kitchen subcategory.

It seems to me that as this sight grows and more consumer reviews start to appear that it will be a powerful tool for online shoppers.
